Professional Studies

The Department of Professional Studies is committed to excellence in the educational preparation of highly qualified professionals who meet the needs of a dynamic pluralistic society. The department provides intellectually challenging, accredited programs including academic and clinical experiences predicated on ethical scholarship, research, and service. Dedicated faculty strive to facilitate the development of leader-practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to excel in professional careers related to Counseling, Educational Leadership, Reading, and School Psychology.

Counseling Program
The Counseling Program provides graduate training in professional counseling, resulting in the Master of Arts degree. Five programs comprise the Counseling Program. They include rehabilitation counseling, elementary guidance, secondary guidance, community counseling and student affairs, and college counseling.

Program review studies are conducted periodically and these studies are public information. They are kept in the office of the Dean of Education and may be viewed by members of the public upon request.

All programs in this department involve entrance requirements, coursework, comprehensive exams and internships. Entrance requirements include taking the Miller Analogy Test or the Graduate Record Exam. Admissions are primarily based on entrance examination scores, letters of recommendation and previous grade point averages. It is desirable to be above average in both performances.

Educational Leadership
The programs in Educational Leadership at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania offer a Master’s of Education degree in Educational Leadership, Principal K-12 certification, Supervisor of Special Education certification, and the Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility. All programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and are nationally recognized by Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC).

Reading
The M.Ed. Reading program will enable students to obtain a master's degree in Reading and will qualify them for certification as a reading specialist. This professional training is essential in diagnosing and helping children overcome reading disabilities, as well as in promoting developmental reading practices in school. A one week summer residency is required.

READ 712 is a five week course with a one week summer residency, designed to prepare the prospective Reading Specialist candidate by presenting them with the situations that help them begin to put into practice the theoretical constructs learned in preceding courses. The clinical requires the graduate student to diagnose the reading problems of clients and prepare and carry out interventions.

School Psychology
The School Psychology Program prepares its graduates for the professional practice of psychology in the schools by emphasizing a scientist-practitioner model of training. The mission of the program is to prepare school psychologists who are capable of providing high quality, ethical psychological services. The program provides solid foundation of instruction, research, and field experience, which reflects current, empirically supported methods in psychology and education. These experiences prepare graduates to provide assistance and expertise in the assessment and treatment of problems experienced by children, schools, and communities.

Respect for diversity among individuals, groups and communities is emphasized throughout the curriculum. The goal of our program is to help each candidate to identify and apply his/her unique talents while utilizing problem-solving, data-based approaches that allow him/her to work with children and families having a broad range of needs. The focus of our program is on the application of empirically supported approaches to assist all children in achieving academic success, social competence, and emotional and physical health.
