Philosophy
The Philosophy Department has two major components:
- the traditional track which emphasizes the study of ethics, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, major historical figures and themes in the history of philosophy, and
- the new religion track which focuses on themes in religion, existentialism, phenomenology and ethics.
Students are encouraged to choose a minor concentration to complement their studies and advance their future career plans.
The Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program is housed in the philosophy department. The program has both a humanities track and specialized track. The humanities track can be completed exclusively at Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center, while the second track puts students on the track to a baccalaureate degree.
The Humanities degree program is a valuable preparation for a professional career. A multi-faceted interdisciplinary program, it focuses on developing writing and communication skills and offers the convenience to choose courses that fit your goals.
The Philosophy Department houses Janua Sophia, the Edinboro University undergraduate journal of philosophy and religion which is distributed nationwide.
The department seeks to nurture and promote undergraduate writing and scholarship. A number of our students have won prizes in the annual essay contest of the Pennsylvania State System's Interdisciplinary Association of Philosophy and Religion (IAPR).
