Edinboro University has the only accredited Master of Social Work degree program in northwestern Pennsylvania. As a result, students can earn both the bachelor's degree and master's degree at one institution in five years.
There are two programs within the Department - the Baccalaureate Social Work Program and the Master of Social Work Program. Both are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The Baccalaureate Social Work Program received initial accreditation from CSWE in 1986. We received reaffirmation of our accreditation in 1991 (1991-1997), 1997 (1997-2005), and 2006 (2005-2013). (Note: Because of the pending site visit for the initial accreditation of our graduate program and accompanying changes within the newly-created department, the baccalaureate program was granted a one year postponement of our reaffirmation review. The review in 2006 was retroactive to 2005.)
In 1999, we received approval from the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education to develop a graduate program in social work. Our Master of Social Work Program achieved candidacy status for accreditation by CSWE in June 2001. The University created a free-standing Department of Social Work as of the fall semester of 2001. Our graduate program received initial accreditation from CSWE in October 2005, retroactive to the date of candidacy status (2001-2009) . The MSW Program was reaffirmed in October 2009.

Faculty members recently received a grant from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation for a cultural exchange with South Carolina State University, a historically black school. Students shared learning and living experiences for one week on each campus. The cultural exchange gave students the opportunity to experience life from a minority perspective. Research activities measured faculty and student perceptions of campus climate.
