Early Childhood & Special Education
The Department of Special Education and School Psychology offers two teacher certification programs - an undergraduate program and a post-baccalaureate program. Both have been approved by the Pa. Department of Education and have been formally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children, the prevailing professional society in special education.
All faculty members hold terminal degrees and have contributed to the field at local, state and/or national levels, and most faculty hold one or more professional certifications in addition to teacher certification in special education, including elementary education, school psychology and administration/supervision. Some hold certifications in more specialized areas of expertise such as reading, strategies intervention, and crisis intervention.
Teacher candidates are provided with multiple opportunities for professional development. In addition to area school districts, community institutions such as the National Barber Institute, Sarah Reed Children's Center, Hermitage House, and Perseus House provide valuable field-based experiences.
Teacher candidates are also encouraged to join the student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children to participate in relevant community service, such as therapeutic horseback riding and intercollegiate initiatives involving adults with disabilities.
