The study of Applied Media Arts - Photography at EU begins with digital capture and expands to instruction in film and darkroom techniques, as well as the use of large format cameras. Studio photography in the contemporary fine art context and its commercial applications are also explored. Photography classes are focused on individual critiques and group discussion of both technical processes and contemporary issues and ideas.

Internship classes at area studios and institutions are strongly encouraged. Many graduates of the program work as freelance photographers. Other graduates work in studios, publishing, museums or corporate/institutional photography departments. Some work as newspaper/documentary photographers, and some enter the teaching profession after completing a graduate degree.

Students seeking careers in photo-journalism or medical photography may want to consider pursuing minors in journalism or biology, respectively. A number of students have combined photographic studies with course work in the communications area to prepare for entry into the television and media fields.
