          The accelerated 4+1 Program offers students the opportunity to earn their Master of Arts in Social Sciences with concentrations in either history or anthropology while adding just one calendar year of additional study to their undergraduate degree program.

          The Master of Arts in Social Sciences (MASS) offers its graduates the opportunity to pursue careers in a variety of fields. From education, to museums, to doctoral work, the M.A. in Social Sciences equips its graduates with the tools needed to excel in the professional world. In collaboration with the Department of Criminal Justice, Anthropology, and Forensic Studies, EU’s Department of History, Politics, Languages, and Cultures offers this program, the only one of its kind in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, with concentrations in history and anthropology.             Admission Requirements and Procedures

            1. Complete the online application.
            2. Pay an application fee of $30.
            3. Provide an official transcript from each college or university at which undergraduate or graduate credit has been earned. Note: If you have not yet graduated, file a partial transcript at the time the application is completed and file a complete transcript as soon as the degree is awarded. Transcripts must be received directly from the issuing school and will not be accepted if “issued to student.”

            Individuals seeking admission as degree students in this program must comply with the following specific admission requirements for this program:

            1. Test scores from either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
            2. Three letters of reference.
              1. Professional Resume.
              2. Typed essay (2-3 pages) answering the following questions:
                1. What attracted you to the profession of social sciences?
                2. What professional goals do you have for the next 10 years, and how will the Master of Arts in Social Sciences help you attain those goals?
                3. What attributes do you possess that suggest success in graduate school and as a practicing social scientist? 

            While an interview with the Program Director is not required, it is strongly encouraged.  Applicants may be denied admission if, in the opinion of the Program Director or the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, the program cannot meet a student’s stated career and personal goals or those goals are not sufficiently developed.  

            Degree Requirements

            Students must comply with the degree requirements for the Master of Arts degree listed in the Graduate Catalog. 

            Students registering for the thesis must submit, with their registration materials, an application for “Authorization to Enroll for Thesis,” which has been signed by the advisor. This application form may be obtained at the School of Graduate Stud­ies and Research.

            Students not completing the thesis must complete a Comprehensive Examination.
