High School Journalism Day

High School Journalism Day, Monday, March 29, Frank G. Pogue Student Center, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

9:00 - 10:00 a.m. - Keynote address is by John Hanchette, Pulitzer Prize in Journalism winner, and former National Affairs Correspondent for Gannett News Services in Washington, D.C.

noon - 2:00 p.m. - The winners of the 4th annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition will be announced and two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. A keynote address will be delivered by alumnus Randy Mcilwain, television reporter/anchor for NBC Channel 5 in Dallas, TX, and winner of numerous Associated Press honors and awards.

Lecture "Concussion Awareness: The Impact of Concussion on Students"

Lecture "Concussion Awareness: The Impact of Concussion on Students," presented by Dr. Eric Johnson of the University of Pittsburgh's Medical Center Sports Concussion Program. March 24, in the R. Benjamin Wiley Arts & Sciences Center, room 107, beginning at 6:00 p.m. He will discuss the basic definition and physiology of mild traumatic brain injury including the latest research on concussion; the assessment and management process following a concussion from the sideline to the clinic evaluation, and the use of ImPACT testing as an objective measure to make recommendations; as well as how concussion may affect the student in the classroom, with recommendations for both the injured student and school staff. Act 48 hours are available. Admission is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored in part by the Council for Exceptional Children, and the Brain Injury Association of Pa. The next Book Discussion Group meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 13, Baron-Forness Library, room 715 from 6:45 - 8:15 p.m. The book selected for April's meeting is The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. Copies of the book are placed on reserve in the library. At each meeting the group selects the book for the following month's discussion. Students, staff and the public are all invited to attend.

Brain Awareness Day 2010

Brain Awareness Day 2010 takes place on Sunday, March 21, inside the Millcreek Mall (near BonTon), 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Students and faculty will have several stations with activities designed to educate individuals about the anatomy of the CNS, sensation and perception, and cognition. The majority of the stations are geared toward children, however, there will be a few stations designed for high school age groups and adults. The event is sponsored by the Psychology Club in partnership with Brain Awareness Week, which is an international effort from the Dana Institute and the Society for Neuroscience. Details
