EDINBORO, PA - After dominating the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District II College Division Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team with three of the ten members of the first team from Edinboro, the Fighting Scots proceeded to place all three student-athletes on the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team.
The trio of juniors -- Julie Nemergut (Youngstown, OH/South Range), Kelly Richards (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) and Lindsay Roberts (Wattsburg, PA/Seneca) - all received Academic All-America status, with Richards named to the second team and Nemergut and Roberts voted to the third team. The teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Richards fell one spot shy of earning All-American honors for the second time in three years at the recent NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. Competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where she finished seventh in 2003, she placed ninth with a time of 11:01.47. An Elementary Education/Special Education major with a 3.97 GPA, she was another key member of last fall's cross country squad. Richards placed 24th at Nationals to earn All-American status. In addition, she earned All-PSAC and All-East Region accolades with fourth and ninth place finishes, respectively. She is a three-time All-PSAC and All-East Region performer in cross country. She earned All-PSAC honors in the 1,500 meter run at this year's PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, placing third. Richards was also recently named to the PSAC Spring Top Ten for academic and athletic excellence.
Nemergut is a Special Education major with a 3.89 GPA. She earned All-American honors this past fall at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships with a fifth place finish (21:59.7). That capped an outstanding run at the end of the year for the junior, and also led Edinboro to a second place finish at Nationals, its highest women's finish ever. Nemergut also won the PSAC Championship with a time of 22:06, and the East Region crown with a time of 20:29, as the Fighting Scots won both titles. She was named the PSAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. During the indoor track & field season she was the PSAC champion in the 1-mile run (5:01.5), and had at least one first place finish in every meet in the 1,000, 1,500 or 3,000 meter runs. Nemergut missed the outdoor track season due to an injury. She previously earned All-American honors in track at the 2004 Outdoor National Championships with an eighth place finish in the 10,000 meter run. Nemergut is a two-time All-PSAC performer in cross country and has earned All-Region honors three times.
Like Richards, Roberts is an Elementary Education/Special Education major, carrying a perfect 4.00 GPA. She recently placed 11th in the 10,000 meter run at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. In the fall, she placed 38th at the Cross Country Nationals. Roberts earned All-PSAC honors in 2004 in cross country with a 10th place finish, then came back to finish seventh at the east Regional, good enough to earn All-Region recognition. As a freshman Roberts was named the PSAC Cross Country Rookie of the Year in 2001. All told, she is a three-time All-PSAC and All-Region runner in cross country.
