The Student Mentoring program is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to engage with business practitioners in their field or industry of interest to assist in the development of a fuller understanding of their chosen profession. The mentoring relationship involves guiding and assisting your assigned students to help them develop and meet their goals. Time should be spent listening and determining how you can best draw from your own personal and business background to assist them in progressing toward a professional career. Below is information to assist you in determining whether you have the time and interest to commit to the program.
Eligibility Requirements for the Mentor
While there are no minimum experience requirements for business professionals to participate as mentors in the Student Mentoring Program, it is expected that all mentors will have some professional work experience in a business, social service or professional organization, or government entity. The success of the program relies on the ability of the student to gain knowledge from the professional experience of his or her mentor.
Since the number of eligible students and available mentors may fluctuate from one year to the next, there is no guarantee that a mentor will be assigned to student mentees in a given year. Your commitment as a mentor is for a one year period (September - May) and is renewable for future years at your discretion. You may also indicate the number of students that you wish to mentor in a given year, with the maximum being three (3). A criminal background check or other professional recommendation may be required for some applicants at the discretion of the Dean of the School of Business.
A completed Mentor Application Form is required and the process for application is discussed at the bottom of this page.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Mentor
- Assist with the personal and professional development of the student.
- Assist the student in defining their professional interests and educational goals.
- Share knowledge and interact with the student on issues related to their career or field on a regular basis.
- Provide networking opportunities between the student and other leaders and practitioners in the business field.
- Discuss possible career paths – yours as well as those of colleagues and others that you may know.
- Help the student develop a tentative plan to achieve their goals, including possible barriers and ways to overcome them.
- Other activities may include some combination of the following: provide job shadowing experiences, review position descriptions in the student’s area of interest, conduct mock job interviews, review the student’s résumé and cover letters, invite the student to strategy meetings, provide tours of relevant facilities and provide opportunities for students to interact with other professionals.
Conversation Starters with your Student Mentees
- Discuss the student’s goals from participating in the mentoring program.
- Discuss the student’s plans for their future.
- Ask the student about his/her interest in Edinboro University and in business as a field of study.
- Discuss your first job out of college and how your career developed since that time.
- Discuss your current position - what you like, what is challenging.
Some Suggested Activities
- Allow the student to job shadow you or a relevant colleague through a typical morning or day.
- Allow the student to perform informational interviews with other colleagues or contacts.
- Allow the student to provide input on a project or presentation you are working on.
- Hold a joint meeting with another mentor and their students.
- If you are unable to meet face-to-face consider scheduling a chat time via the Internet (e.g., Skype, ooVoo).
- Invite the student to accompany you to visits at company facilities.
- Invite the student to attend orientations or training sessions at your workplace.
- Invite the student to attend professional association gatherings as your guest.
- Invite the student to relevant seminars or events that you can attend together.
- Offer feedback on the student’s résumé.
- Provide interviewing tips and participate in a mock interview.
- Share professional literature (e.g., magazines, articles) and websites.
Some Tips for Mentors
- Assist the student in developing his/her own personal network of professional contacts.
- Be clear about purpose and boundaries.
- Develop a communication strategy for your relationship.
- Get to know the student as a person to help communicate your genuine interest in their goals.
- Make a list of things that you would have wanted to know when you were in the position of the student you will be mentoring. The list should include information about yourself (as the mentor), about the organization you work for and your position there, and expectations concerning the mentor-student relationship.
- Make an effort to be available to your student at least once per month.
- Offer to serve as a position reference (if you are comfortable with this).
- Provide honest feedback to your student to assist in their development.
- Share your specific expectations for the mentoring relationship.
Mentor application process
Mentor applications are accepted throughout the year, but must be received by May 31 in order to be fully considered for mentor assignment during the following academic (school) year.
Mentors must complete the online Mentor Application Form. Mentoring requires a time commitment to our students, so mentors should consider their ability to meet this time requirement prior to submitting an application. Mentors may remove themselves from active consideration at any time, but it is strongly suggested that a mentor complete obligations with current students within a given academic year.
Mentor-Student matches will be announced in August for that academic year (September-May).
