Department of Philosophy
Among other things, philosophy studies basic questions concerning the nature of reality, human knowledge, moral obligation, and God’s existence. Philosophers examine these questions in an orderly way, not simply to find answers but also to understand what is being asked. Those who study philosophy tend to be much more at ease with thinking and writing, just as they can be with identifying problems, solving problems, and making decisions. At Edinboro, we offer a traditional track which emphasizes the study of ethics, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, major historical figures and themes in the history of philosophy; a religion track which focuses on themes in religion, existentialism, phenomenology and ethics; and, very soon, a bio-ethics track focusing on the ethical and moral implications of new discoveries and advances in medicine, genetic engineering, drug research, and the like.
