Teacher Candidacy Requirements
During the semester that a Teacher Education student will complete 45 credits (approximately the third semester of coursework), an "Application for Admission to Teacher Candidacy" should be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Education, (Butterfield Hall, rm 330) by the designated due date (October 1 for Spring scheduling, March 1 for Summer and Fall scheduling, July 1 for Fall scheduling). Upper level education courses cannot be scheduled until teacher candidacy is approved. To apply for teacher candidacy, the following guidelines are provided:
o Undergraduate students only:
¨ Complete at least 45 credit hours including current semester
¨ Have a minimum QPA of 2.8 at time of application (will need 3.0 to graduate)
- Graduate or Post-Baccalaureate students only:
¨ Have obtained an undergraduate QPA of 3.0 or greater OR if undergraduate QPA is less than 3.0, completion of 12 or more post-baccalaureate credits with at least a 3.0
- All students must complete coursework:
¨ English 101 or 102 with a passing grade
¨ English Literature Course with a passing grade
¨ Two Math courses at the 100 level or above with a passing grade
¨ SPED215 with a letter grade of "C" or better (ELED/SPED ONLY)
¨ ELED180 or SPED295 (if in curriculum) with a letter grade of "C" or better
¨ HPE majors only: HPE133 or HPE 134 with a letter grade of "C" or better
¨ HPE majors only: HPE220, HPE225, HPE230, or HPE235 with a letter grade of "C" or better
¨ SECONDARY ED majors only: complete 18 credits of classes in major
- All students must pass Praxis I Tests or obtain a composite score of at least 521 with minimum scores in parenthesis below:
¨ PPST: Reading Test - minimum score of 172 (171 minimum for composite score)
¨ PPST: Writing Test - minimum score of 173 (170 minimum for composite score)
¨ PPST: Math Test - minimum score of 173 (171 minimum for composite score)
o Undergraduate students- attend one two-hour Career Development Workshop (dates & times are posted each semester)
Program Continuation Requirements
- Undergraduates - maintain a 2.8 QPA (or your teacher candidacy will be in jeopardy) and graduate with a 3.0 QPA
- Graduate or Post-Baccalaureate students only - maintain a 3.0 QPA
Student Teaching Requirements - as per the University Catalog
- Have Teacher Candidacy
- Pass Praxis II Tests:
¨ Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge - for K-6 and K-12 only, not Secondary Education (7-12)
¨ Specialty Area Test - dependent upon major(s)
o Attend required student teaching orientation meetings at the beginning of the semester prior to your planned student teaching semester, in September for Spring student teaching and in February for Fall student teaching.
o Complete required courses and field experiences in major with a letter grade of "C" or better
o Submit a Student Teaching Prerequisite Form and required attachments to the Office of Student Teaching and Student Assistance. This packet must be submitted by the due date in the semester prior to student teaching and must include:
¨ Student Teaching Prerequisite Form
¨ Student Teaching Information Form
¨ Student Teaching Application
¨ Act 34 Criminal Record Check - valid through the end of student teaching
¨ Act 151 Child Abuse Clearance - valid through the end of student teaching
¨ Act 114 - Federal Criminal History Record (fingerprinting)
¨ TB Test - valid through the end of student teaching
¨ Copy of Praxis I & II scores (passed)
Graduation Requirements
o Have a minimum QPA of 3.0
o Submit a graduation card at the beginning of the semester in which you intend to graduate
o Praxis II tests must be passed and all clearances must be current through the completion of student teaching
Certification Requirements
o Apply for certification during the last semester of your program (all Praxis tests and program requirements must be successfully completed before applying for certification). Application forms can be obtained from the Student Teaching and Student Assistance Office located in Miller Hall, rm 152, or can be found online on the University webpage. Return all applications to the Student Teaching and Student Assistance Office, Miller 152.
