The process of placing students in the appropriate level of English Composition begins in the Admissions Office. Applicants who have submitted SAT, ACT or TOEFL scores are automatically placed in ENGL 010, ENGL 101 or ENGL 103 based on these scores. If none of these scores are available, a student is then required to take a Placement Test which consists of providing a writing sample in response to a writing prompt. This testing is conducted on all Freshmen Registration Days during the summer and any business day at the English Department Office.
Students who have been placed in ENGL 010 by SAT, ACT or TOEFL scores can appeal this decision by opting to take the written placement test. If a student's writing exhibits the proper skill level, the student's placement will be changed to ENGL 101.
Students who are required to take ENGL 010 during the semester do have the opportunity to gain ENGL 101 credit for the work they do in ENGL 010. If the student's work is at a level that would meet ENGL 101 standards, they can, near the end of the semester, petition for ENGL 101 credit. The student needs to speak to the course instructor and present a portfolio of the written assignments prepared for this course. If the instructor agrees with the student petition, the portfolio, with the instructor's recommendation, is forwarded to the Chairperson of the English Department. If the chair agrees, ENGL 101 credit is granted.
