What is HIV testing?
The HIV testing indicates if you are infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which causes AIDS. Tests look for "antibodies" to HIV. One test used at the Health Center is the Orasure test.
How does the Orasure work?
- The special pad is placed between the lower gum and inner cheek of your mouth and left there for two minutes.
- The Orasure system draws HIV antibodies out of the tissues of the cheek and gum. The virus itself is rarely ever found in oral fluid.
How long does it take to get the HIV test results?
- It takes two to three weeks to receive your test results. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to meet with the registered nurse to review your results.
