Established as a private academy in 1857, Edinboro University has continued to be one of the leading educational institutions in Pennsylvania. After the passage of the State Normal Act, the school opened as Edinboro Normal School for the preparation of teachers. Under its original charter, the school was privately administered until 1861, when the commonwealth chartered it as a state normal school. The school was purchased by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1914. The state recognized Edinboro State Teachers College as a four-year college in 1926. The name of the institution was changed to Edinboro State College in 1960. After 125 years of service, Edinboro experienced its most significant change on July 1, 1983, when the College became Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a member of the State System of Higher Education. Located in a resort community in northwestern Pennsylvania, the University is one of the most attractive campuses in the Commonwealth. Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center and Edinboro University in Meadville offer classes and University services at convenient off-campus locations. 6,500 undergraduate and 1200 graduate students attend Edinboro. The University maintains on-campus residence halls for approximately 2,300 students. There are more than forty-three buildings situated on the spacious 585-acre campus, which includes open fields, a lake, and many acres of woods.
Edinboro University awards a wide range of associate, bachelors, and masters degrees as well as certificate and certification programs with more than 100 majors and areas of concentration. Edinboro University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of PASSHE (Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education). The University is also nationally accredited by NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education), and all school personnel certification programs are approved by PDE (Pennsylvania Department of Education). |
