ARTICLE I. NAME AND MISSION STATEMENT
Section I. The name of the society shall be the Alpha Nu Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda, an Academic Excellence and Leadership Honor Society of Edinboro Graduate and Professional Students.
Section II. The Alpha Nu Chapter of AEL has been founded to recognize, promote, and foster outstanding leadership, academic achievement, and service among graduate and professional students; and to encourage and support the development of all graduate and professional student organizations at Edinboro University.
ARTICLE II. CHARTER
Section I. The Alpha Nu Chapter of AEL exists under the authority of the AEL National Headquarters and AEL Board of Directors as witnesses by the granting of a charter to the Chapter. This charter may be revoked should the chapter fail to act in accordance with the purposes for which the chapter is established. Upon revocation of the chapter charter, the society shall cease to be called Alpha Nu Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda, and shall hold no affiliation with Alpha Epsilon Lambda.
Section II. The Alpha Nu Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda shall adhere to the rules and regulations required of all student organizations as described in the Edinboro University Student Handbook. Failure to adhere to the guidelines shall constitute sufficient grounds for revocation of the chapter charter.
ARTICLE III. MEMBERS
Section I. The members of the society shall be those Edinboro University students who have been duly initiated in accordance with the bylaws of the society. The society may also grant honorary membership to other persons in accordance with the bylaws of the society.
Section II. Minimum requirements for membership in the society shall include: 1) a GPA placing the student in the top 35% of his or her major, 2) being a degree seeking graduate student, 3) having completed 12 graduate credit hours, and 4) possessing a record of exemplary leadership and service to graduate students or graduate student organizations. Yearly intake of new members is limited to no more than 1% of the total graduate student population.
ARTICLE IV. ACTIVITIES
Section I. The society shall hold at least two meetings per semester, excluding summers, as scheduled by the president. At least one meeting each years shall be for the purpose of considering applicants for membership, and others shall be called by the president to present membership and other recognition awards, elect officers, and discuss projects.
Section II. The society shall strive to send at least one delegate to the annual meeting of Alpha Epsilon Lambda.
Section III. The society shall establish a primary service project in accordance with the purposes of the society.
ARTICLE V. OFFICERS
Section I. The officers of the society shall be the president, the vice president, secretary, treasurer, webmaster and membership chair. Term of office shall be one calendar year for all officers. All officers shall be elected in the month of April. In the event of a vacancy in the office of president, the vice president shall serve as president until a replacement is elected at the next meeting of the society. In the event of a vacancy of vice president, secretary, or treasurer, the president shall appoint (with the approval of the faculty advisor) a replacement who shall serve until a replacement is elected a the next meeting of the society.
Section II. The dean of the Graduate School shall be invited to serve as the faculty advisor. If the dean should find it necessary to decline the offer, a faculty advisor shall be elected by the members of the society for a minimum term of two years.
Section III. Duties of the president shall include planning and conduct of meetings and initiations, and the coordinate the selection process for new members.
Section IV. Duties of the vice-president shall include the planning and conduct of all service and recreational projects. The vice president shall also serve as the official liaison of the society to Graduate Student Government.
Section V. Duties of the secretary shall be to record meeting minutes, notifying members of all meetings, and maintaining a roll of active and alumni members.
Section VI. Duties of the treasurer shall be to manage the finances of the society.
Section VII. Duties of the membership chair shall be to notify the graduate school of the application process, check all applicants to ensure they meet proper criteria for application, collect applications, and schedule application review meeting.
Section VI. Duties of the webmaster shall be to perform backups of databases and website files on a monthly basis or when updated, ensure website information is current and up to date and keep the website updated and operating properly.
ARTICLE VI. FINANCES
Section I. Members shall be assessed chapter dues in accordance with the bylaws of the campus chapter. Chapter dues shall not exceed $26 per member per year. Members shall be assessed a one-time national dues of $15.
Section II. Members receiving recognition by the AEL National Headquarters, National Fellows, or Governing Members shall not be assessed chapter dues.
Section III. The treasurer shall be responsible for managing the finances of the society. The treasurer shall adhere to all rules and regulations of the Edinboro Student Development Office in managing the finances of the society. All expenditures must be authorized by the president prior to disbursement of society funds. All transactions must be reported to the faculty advisor and membership in a financial report as part of every meeting of the society.
ARTICLE VII. NON-DISCRIMINATION
The society will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation.
ARTICLE VIII. RECRUITMENT AND HAZING
No solicitation or propaganda, such as rushing or social pressure, shall be used to ensure acceptance or invitation to membership. No members or applicants shall be subject to any form of hazing.
ARTICLE IX. AMENDMENTS
The constitution may be altered by at least a two-thirds vote of the active chapter members present at a regular meeting. To be eligible for consideration, the proposed amendments must be presented in writing to the members at least one week prior to the scheduled date of the regular meeting.
By-Laws
1. Membership
1.1 Minimum requirements for membership are specified in the Chapter Constitution, article III, section II. Applicants must meet these requirements to be accepted and initiated.
1.2 Graduate students may not apply for membership during the semester in which they will graduate from Edinboro University
1.3 Initiation of new members will occur once or twice annually as determined by the chapter. Initiation of accepted applicant may occur during a regular chapter meeting or during a specially-scheduled event. Initiation will minimally consist of presenting new members with a certificate of membership and pin. Members will be offered the option to purchase cords for AEL as well.
1.4 Individuals are accepted for membership in the Chapter of AEL shall have any rights specified in the chapter constitution and by-laws.
1.5 Members are responsible for any applicable duties specified in the chapter constitution and by-laws.
1.6 Members may resign their membership in writing to the chapter president.
2. Honorary Members
2.1 This chapter shall have no more than two honorary members a year.
3. Dues
3.1 General dues information is found in the constitution
3.2 Chapter dues are $15.00 annually.
3.3 Dues are payable upon initiation and annually August 1st thereafter
3.4 Members must pay annual dues HOWEVER dues can be refunded (May 1st) if service/fundraising criteria are met (See By-Laws section 4).
3.5 Within two weeks of notification members must pick up refunded dues or can request dues be rolled over for the next academic year.
4. Activities
4.1 AEL will be involved in a primary service activity (i.e. Adopt-a-Spot, Habitat for Humanity, Mentoring, etc..)
4.2 AEL members must be involved in 3 activities a semester to receive a refund on dues.
4.2.1 At least 1 AEL fundraising activity (i.e. Concessions)
4.2.2 At least 1 AEL service activity (i.e. Adopt-a-Spot, Habitat for Humanity, Science Fair Judging, etc..)
4.2.3 Either a fundraising or a service activity
5. Parliamentary Procedure
5.1 Chapter meeting shall follow parliamentary procedure following "Robert's Rules of Order" when necessary.
6. Amendments
6.1 These by-laws may be altered by at least a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the active chapters present at a regular meeting. To be eligible for consideration, the proposed amendments must be presented in writing to the members at least one week (7 days) prior to the scheduled date of the regular meeting
