Program Overview:
The Certificate in Conflict Management is offered under the auspices of the Master of Arts in Communication Studies program at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Completion of the four course (12 credit hour) Certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for managing conflict that arises and becomes entrenched in interpersonal, institutional, and intercultural relations. The Certificate is designed especially for those working in organizations and institutions where ongoing tensions, crisis events, grievances, threats, or complaints impede the realization of goals and objectives and undermine productive relationship development internally and externally.

Course Descriptions
COMM665 Managing Conflict
This course teaches strategies for productive conflict management in interpersonal, group, and organizational contexts. It examines the causes and types of conflict, develops knowledge of the communicative and relational nature of conflict, and reviews strategies and tactics for resolving conflict situations.
COMM675 Intercultural Conflict & Communication
This course takes up advanced theoretical and applied problems in intercultural communication with focus on conflict in the public sphere between persons and groups of varying histories, interests and needs. The prospect for developing recognition, respect and understanding of others in the face of differences, asymmetrical relations, perceived and real threats, non-reciprocity, and so on, is assessed through readings, fieldwork and research reports.
COMM685 Crisis Management
This course teaches strategies for recognizing signs of a crisis situation and developing crisis management skills to deal with such situations. It also examines how to communicate with external publics and handle controversial information and messages.
COMM725 Negotiating Intractable Conflicts
This course develops a basis for understanding how enmity develops and analyzing intractable conflicts interpersonally, interculturally and internationally through learning how and when to intervene and manage polemical positions. It also teaches promoting practices of hospitality, equity and reconciliation.

Admission Requirements: Program start dates: Fall, Spring or Summer semesters.

start of the semester you are applying for.
2. Application Fee: $30 (if not former EUP student); $7 (if former EUP student)
