Admission Procedures

Admission decisions at Edinboro University are made, and the applicants are notified, on a rolling basis -- as applications are completed. However, application for admission should be made well in advance of the anticipated semester of entry. In order for you to be considered for acceptance to Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, you must complete and submit the following documents:

1. An international students application requests personal information, desired program of study (major) and your educational background. The application can now be submitted online to the Undergraduate Admissions Office. An application fee of $30.00 (USD) is required for all applications. On-line applicants can pay the fee on-line. Alternatively mail a money order, payable to: Edinboro University, be sure your name is on the check as it appears on your application. You can pay your application fee with an on-line check, you must have a valid checking account to use this option, pay with a credit card, you must have the card in your possession to use this option or request a waiver of the application fee, which will then be added to your bill at Edinboro.

2. Original or certified copies of secondary school and post-secondary education, (if attended), and academic records, (non-English records must be accompanied by certified translations).

In order for us to consider any courses for possible transfer credit earned outside the United States you are required to have a course and credit evaluation completed by an accredited evaluation service, such as World Education Services. You can access their website at www.wes.org for detailed instructions on how to have this evaluation completed. Please have WES forward the completed evaluation to us. We will then review the complete evaluation for transfer credit to Edinboro University. For a list of accredited Credential Evaluation providers go to www.naces.org.

3. If your native language is not English you must provide evidence of your English language Proficiency, Edinboro requires a minimum of 173 (computer based) or 500 (paper based) TOEFL for undergraduate and 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based) for graduate admission is required. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) should send you TOEFL score directly to Edinboro University. Our TOEFL institutional code is 2651.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is offering an ESL Bridge Program for accepted international students who would like to improve their academic English and become familiar with our campus prior to the start of the Fall semester. This program is also available to students with a TOEFL score between 475-499 (paper based), 151-172 (computer based) or 52-60 (internet based) who would like to enroll at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. 4. Official financial documents proving that you will have sufficient funding to cover the costs of studying at Edinboro University for one academic year. This evidence is required by U.S. Immigration Rules and Regulations to issue you an immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019), which you will need to obtain the F-1 or J-1 student visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

5. Student Transfer notification form is needed if you are currently attending another college/university within the United States and you would like to transfer to Edinboro University. The foreign student advisor at your current college or University should complete this form.

Campus Life

Students can participate in extra-curricular activities at American universities. Edinboro University recognizes that such participation is a vital part of the total educational experience. The strength of the university lies in its diversity between an outstanding academic experience and an equally stimulating extra curricular program. The extra curricular activities can both support and complement formal education.

Dining Services

As an on-campus resident you are required to purchase a "meal plan." If you are living off campus you may purchase a meal plan but you are not required to do so. There are many types of meal plans that you can choose from when arriving at Edinboro University and these obviously differ in price.  The meal program at Edinboro is designed to meet the student's expectations and the services provided are reflective to today's active lifestyles. English Language Proficiency

English is the language of instruction at Edinboro University. International students must be able to read, write and comprehend English sufficiently to participate and study in an academic program.

All applicants whose native language is not English should submit to the University official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). If the TOEFL is unavailable, please contact the International Student Services Office for an alternative assessment method. The TOEFL website is: http://www.toefl.org. English is an official language in many countries and is used by millions of people as a second language. Second language speakers of English are not necessarily fluent in Standard Academic English. For undergraduate applicants our TOEFL requirement is 61 for iBT/New Generation, 173 computer-based or 500 paper-based. For graduate applicants our TOEFL requirement is 79-80 for iBT/New Generation, 213 computer-based or 550 paper-based.

Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) provides a range of services to enrolled students. As a student, your health and well being is vital to your academic success and to your enjoyment of university life. The services are intended to facilitate intellectual and personal growth by helping students resolve medical and or social concerns that may interfere with their academic progress. The Student Health Services (SHS) believes that each individual is responsible for his/her own health. The staff is committed to helping students maintain and improve their health. Clinical services are designed to assist students with their immediate medical problems and to support their future well-being.

The level of care available is similar to that offered in a family practice setting, with special attention given to the needs of young adults. Services include, but are not limited to the following:

Location

Edinboro University is located on a 585-acre site in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Edinboro is a small and safe community with approximately 8,000 residents. The community of Edinboro is located in northwestern Pennsylvania approximately 20 miles south of Lake Erie. Pennsylvania is in the eastern part of the United States bordered by the state of New York to the north and east, and Ohio to the west. The closest city to Edinboro is Erie, which is one of Pennsylvania's larger cities.


Mandatory Health Insurance

In order to serve international students' medical needs and provide our university physicians with information relative to their personal medical history, it is required upon enrollment that you have your family physician complete a Confidential Health Record. The Emergency Treatment Authorization form may be completed by you or your parent(s). These forms will be collected at the student orientation.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (EUP) requires J and F visa holders to maintain adequate insurance coverage. International students must maintain valid medical insurance for the entire period of their enrollment at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. For each semester of enrollment J and F students must provide proof of insurance coverage to Ghering Health Wellness Center.

These requirements have been established in an attempt to provide the best medical care possible and to avoid excessive medical costs in the event of an illness or accident.


Orientation

Orientation is offered at the start of each fall semester for all new International students. Orientation time has been reserved to accomplish many important tasks such as, registering for classes, paying tuition bills, opening bank accounts, and buying textbooks. This time will also be used to introduce students to various University facilities, services and offices. Often International Students arrive prior to the start of classes. Students who are living in University Housing will be provided housing at no additional cost if you arrive one-week before classes.


Residence Life and Housing

If you are a freshman and under the age of 22, you are required to live on campus for at least one academic year. On-campus housing is available in one of the five residence halls. All on-campus residents are asked to sign a Housing and Food Service Agreement for one academic year.

Each room is equipped for two students with two beds, dressers, desks, chairs and closets/wardrobe. Rooms are also equipped with free local telephone service. Internet connection is also available in all of the rooms at a reasonable cost. Mail/post is delivered and picked up at all residence halls Monday through Friday. All residence halls are coed (men and women) this means that both men and women are in the same residence halls, however on different floors.

Safety

Significant resources have been committed to ensure the safety and security of the students, staff and visitors who arrive on our campus. The 14 officers of the University Police Department provide Edinboro University with a high degree of protection. Police patrols and programs complement the efforts of various student affairs resources to ensure that a safe and secure learning environment is maintained at all times.


Transfer of Credits

The coursework that you completed at another recognized university (international or American) could be evaluated for transfer toward your degree at Edinboro. If you attend another university in the United States, you must submit the official transcript. You will receive a letter detailing the courses that Edinboro will accept toward your degree and a program sheet outlining the remaining coursework required.

If you attend another university outside the United States, in order for us to consider these courses for possible transfer credit, you must contact World Education Services at www.WES.org to obtain a credential evaluation. We will then review the completed evaluation for transfer credit to Edinboro University. Please consult their website for complete instructions on how to obtain this evaluation. The University Profile

Edinboro University is the largest and most comprehensive multi-purpose university in northwestern Pennsylvania. Edinboro has a tradition of educational excellence, matched by a distinguished faculty of more than 400, two-thirds of whom have doctoral degrees or the highest degree in their fields. The current student to instructor/professor ratio is 18:1.

The University offers more than 100 associate, baccalaureate, and master's degree programs. Edinboro offers many programs for both undergraduate and graduate students at an affordable price and in a safe environment.

The enrollment at Edinboro is approximately 8,000 students (fall 2009), with students coming from various different states in the United States, as well as 40 countries from around the world. Edinboro University provides an environment that ensures fair, just and equitable treatment, and nurtures civility, respect and dignity for all members of the Edinboro University community.


Visa Requirements

In addition to your official acceptance letter you need to have a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - For Academic and Language Students issued by EUP, commonly referred to as an I-20. This certificate is needed for you to apply for a student visa at the US Embassy/Consulate in your country. To obtain the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - For Academic and Language Students from EUP we require advance payment of $500.00 for your tuition and fees. Upon receipt of this advanced payment EUP will issue your I-20 and a receipt.

If you are unable to secure a student visa, we will refund $400 of your advance deposit less any processing fees ($40.00 USD wire transfer fee). The refund will be processed after we receive your written request to cancel your acceptance.

If you accept our offer of admission, you must comply with the advanced payment requirement. This requirement is not intended to be an inconvenience. Rather, it is meant to demonstrate your strong intention to attend EUP.


Weather

During the school year (from August to May) you will witness the seasons changing from summer to fall (autumn) to winter and to spring.

When you arrive in August, it will be summer with temperatures ranging between 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). During the fall/autumn, the temperatures slowly begin to get colder. November through March (winter) temperatures are very cold and there is a lot of snow. A single snowfall can average up to ten inches. Spring temperatures are usually cool, and gradually it becomes warmer as the summer months move closer.
