Located on the 1st floor of the library, the reference collection is a non-circulating collection of materials carefully selected to support the information and research needs of EUP students, staff, and faculty. Reference books are excellent for finding specific facts or for developing a broad understanding of a topic and, as such, serve as an important part of the research process. Reference librarians are also available to assist patrons with their research and information needs. You can email and/or call (814-732-2253).
Where is the Reference Collection?
The print materials of the collection are located on the 1st floor, to the left as you enter the library. These include atlases, maps, encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, statistics and data manuals and others. Some of the reference collection's government and legal documents are located on the other side of the 1st floor (nearest the parking lot stairwell).
Need Help? Speak with a Reference Librarian.
Reference librarians assist patrons with their research and information needs. The library faculty are focused on supporting productive use of the reference collection. No question is insignificant. We are available on a one-to-one basis to demonstrate how to locate the appropriate materials for your needs. Librarians are listed in the staff directory.
Where can I find a Reference Librarian?
Reference Librarians are located at the 1st floor Information Desk. They are available to assist you more than 80 hours per week during times when classes are in session (Summer hours vary).
9:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
1:30 - 10:00 p.m.
What is "virtual reference?"
Many times, researchers have questions from home or are otherwise not able to come to the library to speak. Virtual reference provides a way for such individuals to receive help from one of the librarians. We are currently using AOL's instant messaging program (buddy name = BF Library) to provide virtual reference service. To learn more, please visit our IMALibrarian page.
What computing resources are available?
The 1st Floor Reference Area provides access to nearly 40 networked computers. All workstations provide access to the Internet. All workstations provide access to Microsoft Office as well as Photoshop and SPSS.
