Audition Requirements for Bagpipe Majors
Performance Requirements: Prepare a March, Strathspey and Reel of your own choosing. The March should be a four part, competition caliber piece. The Strathspey and Reel selections may be four-part pieces, or two two-parted tunes.
Prepare a piobaireachd with some type of crunluath variation.
Teaching requirements: Be prepared to conduct a short lesson to a student (we will provide the student). The lesson can be at any level, and the lesson plan can be of your own choosing. The lesson should take about 20-30 minutes.
Sight reading requirements: Be prepared to sight read a simple tune. The tune will be at the approximate difficulty level of Athol and Breadalbane Gathering.
Writing/theory requirements: Be prepared to write out eight measures of a tune, either March, Strathspey or Reel, which will be selected by the auditioners.
Listening requirements: Be prepared to write out a piece of music that will be played several times for the candidate.
Storytelling requirements: Be prepared to tell a short story. It doesn’t have to be about bagpipes.
Writing requirements: Submit a short (not more than two or three pages double spaced) statement of life purpose. Why do you want to be a bagpiper? How do you see yourself impacting the world of bagpiping?
Provide a list of your repertoire.
Provide a brief resume of your experience as a musician
Singing requirements: Be prepared to sing a short song of your own choosing.
