Greetings! I hope that you will enjoy preparing for and playing your flute audition at Edinboro University. You will want to prepare two contrasting movements from works that show your level of accomplishment in the areas of tone, technique, articulation and phrasing. You will also be asked to play scales and sight-read. Here are some suggestions for your audition repertoire:
Please prepare one Baroque or Classical work, such as:
One movement from a Sonata or Suite by: J. S. Bach, Handel, Marcello, or Telemann
-OR a movement from a concerto by: Mozart, Haydn, Boccherini, or Pergolesi
Please prepare one Romantic or 20th Century work, such as:
Bloch –Suite Modale; Faure- Fantasie; Godard – Allegretto and Idylle; Hindemith- Sonata; Honegger- Danse de la Chevre; Milhaud – Sonatine. These are examples - there are many works to choose from:
Any selection from a collection such as: Flute Music by French Composers, ed. Moyse
Or a selection from: Twenty Four Concert Pieces, ed. Cavally (Southern)
-OR an Etude such as one by Andersen, Donjon, Kohler, Kummer, etc.
Be prepared to play scales:
Major scales: Two octaves, ascending and descending, in keys up to four flats and four sharps----Minor scales are a plus.
A chromatic scale, from C1 (lowest) to B-flat 3 (highest) ----playing to B-natural 3 and C 4 is a plus.
You will be asked to sight-read:
If you would like to work on your sight-reading skills, here is a suggestion for practicing this valuable musical skill! Setting a metronome to a slow or moderate tempo, select an easy passage of music you have never heard or seen. Look through the opening rhythmic figure, and then play it through without hesitating or correcting. Go on to the next beat if you make a mistake! If you focus primarily on rhythmic reading, your pitches will tend to also fall into place. As you improve at this over a number of days, select slightly more difficult passages, continuing to utilize the metronome to help keep you honest.
