Academic Advising, Counseling & Mentoring

Academic Advising

All degree-seeking students at the University are assigned an academic advisor who is a regular member of the Edinboro University Faculty. Through the academic advising relationship, students are offered the following:

  • Guidance about academic policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Encouragement to establish realistic academic and career goals
  • Assistance with course selection, scheduling, and drop/add/withdrawal processes
  • Input about making a successful transition to the Main Campus (if applicable)

The professional academic counselor at the Porreco College works with individual students on a first come-first served basis during regularly scheduled, walk-in advising hours.

Academic Counseling

Some students encounter complex issues that extend beyond the scope of academic advising. These issues are typically addressed at the Porreco College through academic counseling sessions. Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Improving organizational skills
  • Time management coaching
  • Improving academic performance through active learning strategies
  • Addressing in-class conflicts including academic honesty concerns
  • Personal issues that are a threat to academic success
  • Exploring the possibility of withdrawal from the University
  • Consideration of transferring to another institution

The professional academic counselor at the Porreco College provides these services to students on a first come-first served basis during regularly scheduled, walk-in advising hours. At times, referrals are made to other service providers in the local community or at the Main Campus.

Academic Mentoring

All College Start at Porreco (CSP) students are required to participate in 3-4 academic mentoring sessions each semester. Other students taking classes at the Porreco College are also invited to meet with an academic mentor. The most common topics that students address with their mentor are the following:

  • Logging in and resetting passwords for the My.edinboro.edu portal
  • Navigating Desire to Learn (D2L)
  • Accessing University email
  • Numerous financial aid and billing questions
  • Decoding course syllabi and understanding professor expectations
  • Study skills tips
