Veterans' Education Benefits

"Where is my payment?"
Did you submit your Benefits Request Form to the Office of Records and Registration?

Chapters 30 and 1606:  If you requested benefits and have not received payment, you should check WAVE at http://www.gibill.va.gov/.  You must verify your attendance before payment is released at the end of each month. 
Chapter 1607 (REAP):  You do need to certify your monthly attendance; however, if your regular payment becomes unusually late, you should call the VA to inquire.
For Chapter 35 (DEA): You do not need to certify monthly attendance.

Veterans' Education Benefits

Information and printable forms regarding Veterans' Education Benefits and the Montgomery GI Bill are available at the Department of Veterans Affairs website, http://www.gibill.va.gov/.  After the Department of Veterans Affairs approves a student's eligibility, and after the school certifies the student's enrollment, benefits are paid directly to the student after the end of each month.

Procedures for using Veterans' Education Benefits at Edinboro University are described below for the following programs:

Chapter 30 MGIB:  Active Duty.
Chapter 1606 MGIB:  Reserves/National Guard.
Chapter 35:  Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance.
Chapter 31:  Vocational Rehabilitation.
Chapter 1607 (REAP):   Reserve Educationan Assistance Program.  Please consult the Department of Veterans Affairs website for more information.

Financial Aid Adjustments:  Edinboro University's Financial Aid Office takes Veterans' Education Benefits into consideration when awarding financial aid packages.  Students should report their benefits to the Financial Aid Office.  If the benefits were not reported when initially applying for financial aid, the student should inquire whether their account requires any adjustment.  See Financial Aid Adjustments for veterans at the Financial Aid Office's web page.

New Applicants for VA Education Benefits

Students who are eligible to receive Veterans' Education Benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill must submit application forms to initiate the benefits.  Students may download and print the required application forms (links below) and then mail them to the Office of Records and Registration.  Or, students may contact the Office of Records and Registration for information and application forms. 

The University will submit the application forms to the Department of Veterans Affairs and certify enrollment as required.  Information about the MGIB is available at the Department of Veterans Affairs website at http://www.gibill.va.gov/

Keep in mind that the processing time at the Department of Veterans Affairs can run as long as six to eight to twelve weeks.

FIRST TIME applicants for benefits under Active Duty (Chapter 30), Reserves/National Guard (Chapter 1606), or REAP (Chapter 1607) will need the following items:

Returning or Transfer Applicants for VA Education Benefits

Students who are RETURNING to school after a break in enrollment or TRANSFERRING from another school will need the following forms:

Continuing Students

Students who are continuing their enrollment and MGIB benefits in consecutive semesters must submit a Veterans' Education Benefits Request Form for each semester or summer session.  The best time to submit this form is immediately after pre-scheduling for the requested session. (Fall and Summer terms may be listed on the same form, since both sessions can be prescheduled at the same time.)

Payment Rates

The Education Assistance payment rates have increased, effective October 1, 2006.  Detailed information is provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs at http://www.gibill.va.gov/.

W.A.V.E. - Certifying Attendance for Monthly Payments

Students using benefits under Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606 must certify their attendance to the Department of Veterans Affairs at the end of each month in order to receive their monthly payment.  Log in to W.A.V.E. at the Department of Veterans Affairs website: http://www.gibill.va.gov/.

Chapter 31:  Vocational Rehabilitation

Students must apply directly to the Department of Veterans Affairs to request benefits under the Vocational Rehabilitation program.  Check the GI Bill website http://www.gibill.va.gov/ for information.

Credit for Health and Physical Education Courses

Students who have a DD Form 214 (Release or Discharge from Active Duty) verifying honorable discharge may be eligible to receive three health and physical education credits.  Students should submit a certified copy (recorded at a county courthouse) of the original "member 4" copy of the DD214 to the Office of Records and Registration.

Credit for Military Coursework

Veterans may submit military transcripts with a request that work completed within the Armed Forces be considered for course credit at Edinboro University.  This includes work completed in formal service schools and training programs.

New students should contact the Admissions Office and submit documentation with their admissions materials.

Edinboro University is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOC) and participates in the Concurrent Admissions Program (ConAP) in cooperation with the United States Army.
