Employment Procedures for Students
FEDERAL or INSTITUTIONAL
All students who are seeking any student employment offered by the University must be awarded either federal or institutional work.
Step 1. COMPLETE THE FAFSA APPLICATION YEARLY - Deadline MARCH 15th
Website - www.fafsa.ed.gov - Online is the preferred method of applying and has a much faster response time.
Say "YES" to work study, even if you are not sure if you want it. The YES response will make certain that your name will be made available to prospective employers and does not commit you to accepting any position. This includes any type of student employment on campus.
International Students ONLY:
•a. International Students must contact the International Office to initiate the Student Employment process. Funding is limited; therefore, students are encouraged to start this process early.
•b. Skip to Step 6 and complete the remaining steps.
Step 2: MEET THE MARCH 15TH PRIORITY DATE.
The "priority" deadline date for filing this form is March 15th of each year for the upcoming academic year.
Step 3: REVIEW YOUR STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR).
You will receive a Student Aid Report to verify information submitted on the FAFSA form. MAKE SURE IT IS CORRECT AND COMPLETE! If everything is correct, you will not need to do anything else until you receive your award letter.
Step 4: MAKE CORRECTIONS TO YOUR SAR IF NEEDED.
If corrections are needed, correct the Student Aid Report and send it back to the address indicated.
Step 5: REVIEW YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD LETTER.
If you said "YES" to work study, you will receive an award letter in late March or early April.
- § The work-study on your award letter is identified as Federal Work Study (FWSP) and/or Institutional Work (INSTWK).
- § If you did not receive any type of student employment, please contact our office.
Step 6: SEARCH FOR A POSITION.
A work-study award does not guarantee you will obtain a work-study position. To be considered eligible for employment and to increase your chances of obtaining a work-study position, you must contact prospective employers on campus to request an interview. Check early for possible jobs. If you wait until the semester begins, many positions are already filled. It is highly recommended that you contact several offices in order to increase your chances of obtaining employment.
Step 7: ENSURE YOUR AUTHORIZATION TO WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
You must be authorized to work by the student employment office. Note: Authorizations are initiated by the hiring department.
Step 8: COMPLETE PAYROLL INFORMATION.
You must go to the Payroll Office, located on the 2nd floor of Reeder Hall to complete the necessary paperwork.
The student must:
- § Provide the name of the county where you live.
- § Provide the name of the township or borough where you live.
- § Provide student id or driver's license.
- § If applicable, provide documentation that EMST has been paid for the current year.
- § If interested in direct deposit, provide banking account and routing numbers.
- § Present your social security card per requirement of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
- § NOTE: International students must bring your visa/passport.
You will not get paid for your worked hours until this step is completed!
