Supported Technology

Supported Technology

UPDATED: July 2010 - Technology and Communications periodically reviews the availability of service and support on University hardware and software on an annual basis, We have been diligently watching and testing the new versions of the Windows and Macintosh operating systems such as Windows 7 and the Apple OS X versions and calculating the minimum supported specifications for each of these platforms.  Today's recommended systems exceed these requirements.  However, during this time frame, both the older Windows XP and the Apple OS X operating systems have received security updates and required patches as well and these updates have increased the size and system requirements needed to optimally operate your computer on the campus network.  Therefore, we have an immediate need to change the current minimum supported hardware configurations for both the Windows and Apple Macintosh computers because anything lower than these specifications will not operate at optimal efficiency.  If you request assistance on a Windows or Apple Macintosh computer that does not meet these requirements we will ask that you either upgrade the components or replace the computer with a supported system.  We realize that some computers that are on the borderline of these specifications may serve as useful systems based on their planned use with only minor upgrades.  For example, a computer with a 2 ghz processor and low memory which is running too slow to be productive may only need a RAM upgrade to function as a basic word processor or email station.  If you are not sure what specifications your system possess, please contact the Technology Help Center for assistance.

 HARDWARE*

 Computers

-Windows XP Computer requirements: A 2.0ghz processor with 1gb of RAM or above and at least a 60gb hard drive.
- Windows 7  Computer requirements: A 3.0ghz processor with 2gbs of RAM or above and at least a 80gb hard drive.
-Apple Macintosh requirements: Intel based processors only with 1gb of RAM or above and at least a 80gb hard drive.
-Currently, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) has a computer purchasing contract in place for all 14 state universities with Lenovo. Edinboro University purchases the Lenovo computers from Computer Showcase and we recommend various models of the Lenovo systems which can be found online at http://www.csonline.net/edinboro/.  You may notice some systems which are not Lenovo brands and that is becuase Lenovo doesn't offer these particular models.
-All other computer models are not supported unless some specific agreement has been made between the party using the system(s) and Technology and Communications; such agreements must be in writing and are the responsibility of the department to obtain

- Repair costs for the recommended computers will be covered by Technology and Communications under the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the computer. Enhancements or upgrades are not covered by Technology and Communications.

NOTE:  Laptops, Tablet PCs and Netbooks often do not meet these specifications.  That does not mean that we are not going to support them, but please understand that they may not be able to effectively run today's versions of applications.  Netbooks in particular do not efficiently run many of today's applications because their processing power is very limited.

Printers

-Only recommended HP Laser Printers are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the printer.
-Only recommended inkjet printers under warranty are supported, any inkjet printer out of warranty is considered disposable and is not supported.
-Any printer that is 10 years or older is not supported.
-Replacement toner cartridges, ink jet cartridges and paper are the responsibility of the department who uses the printer unless the printer has been placed on the University's print quota system.  Technology and Communications is responsible for any printer supplies for printers residing on the University's print quota system.  Technology & Communications reserves the right to review a request to add a printer to the quota system.

Scanners

-Only recommended Hewlett-Packard USB capable scanners are supported and only models not more than 5 years old are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the scanner
-Some HP scanners are not 100% compatible with all the Apple products, other scanners such as the Epson or Nikon will be evaluated and supported if such a scenario arises.

 Hard Drives

-Only recommended 80 gigabyte and larger hard drives are supported by Technology and Communications

Monitors

-Only recommended 15" and above LCD monitors are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the monitor
-In most cases, an out of warranty repair for any computer monitor will be reviewed and if a functional replacement monitor is available, one will be issued.
-CRT style monitors are no longer supported
NOTE: In most all cases monitor repairs are not done in today's practice becuase it is too expensive and it is financially beneficial  to simply replace them new new models.

 Memory (RAM)

-Memory chips are generally inexpensive and these are the responsibility of the department requesting memory upgrades.  Due to the vast variety of models and types, consultation with Technology and Communications staff is required.  Technology and Communications will provide the appropriate procurement information that will match the requestor's needs. Due to compatibility issues, it is not always possible to ‘add' memory; existing memory may have to be replaced.

Networked Equipment

Any device that is to access the campus network must contain all of the most recent anti-virus updates as well as the most recent operating system security patches and updates that we require and further be able to receive automated updates of these types.  Otherwise, the equipment will not be connected to the campus network; equipment that is connected and fails to maintain these requirements may be blocked from the network.

Other equipment components

-Only recommended components will be supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the cost of a new or replacement component.
-In most cases it is possible that a replacement part may be available in Technology and Communications parts inventory, in which case the part will be replaced.

SOFTWARE*

This is a list of the commonly used software applications and their associated versions that we recommend and support.  However, it is not an exclusive list as some of the staff members in Technology and Communications may use or may have used other software applications in which they may be able to provide consultation and troubleshooting.  Please contact the helpdesk if you have support questions related to any software application.

Windows Operating System

-Only Windows versions XP Professional and Windows 7 with updated service packs and security patches are supported.  We also support Windows Vista Enterprise edition to some extent but as of the date of this publication we have not committed to a campus wide Windows Vista support strategy.
-Systems running other versions of windows must be upgraded to handle at least Windows XP Professional SP3 or Windows 7 before additional support will be offered.
-Updated patches to the OS are pushed out to all end users on a regular basis and it is important that end users have at least the minimal supported OS to ensure maximum security

Macintosh Operating System

-Mac OS versions 10.6 and above are supported
-Systems running other versions of the Mac OS must be upgraded to handle at least or 10.6  before additional support will be offered.

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)

-Only Microsoft Office 2003 and Office 2007 are supported for Windows systems
-Only Microsoft Office 2004 and Office 2008 are supported on the Apple Macintosh system

Adobe Products

Support on the following Adobe products is limited to supplying purchasing information and assistance with installation.  Beyond these limitations, support on the use of the application is not available.  The software license requires that these applications can only be installed on University owned equipment and NOT ON LAPTOPS.  Departments are responsible for purchasing their own Adobe applications/licenses if they wish to install these products on their University owned laptops.  If you wish to purchase an Adobe product for a laptop, please submit a request for pricing through the Technology and Communications Help Desk.

-SPSS version 15 or 18

Browsers

Internet Explorer
-Due to the security issues centered within IE, only the most current version of IE will be supported.  Any older version should be upgraded prior to continued support.  The upgrades are normally very quick and readily accessible.  Note that in the Fall of 2008 IE version 8.0 was released by Microsoft.  Until we have fully tested this product and the manufacturers of our mission critical applications such as SCT Banner, Oracle, SAP and several others officially support this product we will not recommend its use.

FireFox version 3.0 and above

Safari version  4.0 and above

Please note that due to limitations on available resources for development and vendor restrictions, not all web-based applications will be available to all platforms or all browsers.  Primary development will be for Windows based systems running Internet Explorer 6 or higher; systems developed for campus & public use will include significant consideration for Firefox compatibility (for both Windows and Macintosh platforms), although this compatibility cannot be guaranteed.

CLASSROOM or AUDIO/VIDEO EQUIPMENT

 Video Projectors
-Only recommended models are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the cost of a new or replacement component.
-Video projector lamps for projectors will be replaced by Technology and Communications if the cost of the projector bulb warrants the effective value of the current projector.
-All repairs for any a/v equipment are outsourced to an external vendor through Technology and Communications
- If available, a replacement model may be temporarily installed while repairs are being made
- Click http://adeptt.edinboro.edu/users/bradley/classtech/classroomequip.asp for a list of the supported classroom technology scenarios

Other Audio/Video equipment
-All repairs for any a/v equipment are outsourced to an external vendor through Technology and Communications
- If available, a replacement model may be temporarily installed while repairs are being made
- There are many varying types of audio/video equipment available in the world today and we can obviously only support a small percentage of these devices.  Before purchasing any audio or video equipment, please contact Learning Technology Services at x2484 for advice.
- Any existing audio or video equipment will have to be examined before a determination of support levels can be offered.
- We are discontinuing support and depleting our inventory of all vhs equipment and will not support or provide any vhs camcorders for resource acquisition. We will continue to provide vhs players until these units fail or are no longer of use.  We would strongly suggest that vhs material be converted to digital formats (according to applicable copyright laws) or repurchased in the appropriate digital format.

*Please Note: Routine maintenance and support for any recommended hardware or software on this list may be denied if it is determined that the financial and functional value of the item(s) is not worth the required resources.
