Dr. Terry Smith
Dean of College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Terry L. Smith joined Edinboro University in 1997. As Dean, he oversees more than 300 faculty and staff that serve more than 5,100 majors. The college consists of 20 academic departments and offers eight associate, 45 baccalaureate, and eight masters programs.
Dean Smith came to Edinboro from the University of the District of Columbia, where he taught philosophy and logic. He also served as Assistant Provost and Assistant to the President. Schoalrly works by Dean Smith include the book Behavior and Its Causes. He has travelled to both Poland and China to enhance Edinboro University's relationship with universities in those countries. Dean Smith is responsible for Edinboro University's Porreco and Buba centers, and also represents Edinboro University as its Economic Development liaison.
He takes pride in his faculty and their dedication to engaging students in active learning. To this end, the College of Arts and Sciences has developed student journals, created opoprtunities for student/faculty research, developed road courses and expanded internship opportunities for its students.
He is actively working to promote economic development in the region, having won grants totaling more than $450,000 to assist in the creation of an arts incubator located at 423 Plum Street in Edinboro. The STARTup Incubator is a nonprofit that extends the educational mission of Edinboro University to the economic development of the region by helping entrepreneurs and early-stage art-based and traditional manufacturing companies in their growth and development.
Dean Smith is an outdoor enthusiast and says, "Life is better when lived on water with paddle in hand." He and his wife, Nora, have two children, Russell and Trisha.
