2010 Annual DisABILITIES Conference

Interest in presenting at Edinboro University’s first ever disabilities conference has been overwhelming. Thank you for your submissions! It was difficult task (given the number of great proposals received), but the schedule of presentations for the 2010 conference has been set.

 


Printer Friendly VersionEdinboro University’s first ever disabilities conference, Transition, Independence and Empowerment, will focus on ensuring the educational achievement of students with disabilities who are striving to achieve academically.

Each track will emphasize the process and ultimate goal of empowering students with disabilities for successful educational transitions leading to competitive employment and independent living.

Conference tracks will correspond with the interests of the following four participant groups:

•    K-12 educators
•    post-secondary educators
•    agency and community service providers and
•    parents, families, friends and allies of students with disabilities

Each track will emphasize the process and ultimate goal of empowering students with disabilities for successful educational transitions leading to competitive employment and independent living.

We are requesting proposals for multiple presentations that will take place on Thursday, August 5, 2010 and Friday morning, August 6, 2010.

Each session will be 90 minutes in length and should include a 15 to 20-minute presentation on theoretical background, followed by a 60-minute workshop.  Ten to 15 minutes should be allotted for questions. Please indicate which of the following topics your proposal will address as well as the track that is most appropriate for your topic:
 
•    Types of disabilities within the educational experience (physical, cognitive, mental health or disabilities in general)
•    Transitioning from secondary to post-secondary education or other key transitioning events
•    Service delivery issues (technology, accommodations and accessibility)
•    Life skills within the post secondary education environment (housing, transportation, recreation, athletics, leisure activities, social, activities of daily living or attendant care services)
•    Career development, planning and corporate recruitment post degree
•    Overcoming prejudice, ignorance, and alienation within the educational environment (administration, faculty, student and staff)
•    Integration challenges for students of disabilities
•    Advocacy, legal and ethical concerns
•    Economics: Decreasing budgets and increasing demands
•    Students with disabilities and the intersection with other identity aspects (e.g., race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation)
•    Servicing non-traditional student populations (i.e. wounded warriors, ASD and geriatric)
•    Disability studies as an area of academic expertise
•    Other

All presentations will be considered for continuing education credits including but not limited to: Continuing Professional Education Credits (CPE), Act 48 Continuing Teaching Credits, National Certified Counselor Credits (NCC) and Continuing Legal Education Credits (CLE).

The submission of a proposal is approval for the audio and/or taping of those selected presentations.

A pre-conference panel discussion focusing on the issue of students with disabilities and their active participation in athletics and recreation will occur the evening of Wednesday, August 4th.  This presentation will be in conjunction with a wheelchair basketball competition.
