Tartan Day

  • It's time to Tartanize!

This traditional celebration has a special meaning here at Edinboro University as it helps us honor our Scottish founders and so many other Scottish-Americans’ contributions to our country in nearly every field of human endeavor.

More than two centuries ago, the Scottish families from the “original” Edinburgh – the Culbertsons, Reeders, Galloways, Dunns, Campbells, McWilliamses, McLenathams and others – settled the rich, fertile farmland of northwestern Pennsylvania.  Some 60 years later, their descendants founded the Edinboro Academy – forerunner to what would become the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education.

Observing Tartan Day is not only a great way to pay tribute to our Scottish founders, but also a great way to celebrate our University’s long-standing traditions.

In the United States, it’s estimated that more than six million people claim Scottish descent. But on November 30, the more than 9,000 diverse individuals who make up our campus community and our more than 55,000 alumni will indeed be Scottish for the day.

For starters, it’s a day when we show off our Royal Stewart tartan!  No tartan yet? No problem!  On Tartan Day, the Book Store will offer a 20 percent discount on all things tartan to help you add to your Scottish wardrobe.

Here’s what’s happening on Tartan Day:
