Cross Creek as Literary and Visual Place: Writing Marjorie's Cross Creek

     Baron-Forness Library @ 200 Tartan Road, Edinboro, PA 16444

Dr. Andrea Wyman, Baron-Forness Library Faculty
    Baron-Forness Library Room 715

Literary places have long been of interest to readers and writers alike. But what makes a literary place? Is it the intrigue of the romantic site? The markets of London? The murky waterfront smells of Hong Kong? Anne Fadiman refers to a literary visual lens that provides you-are-there-reading to the audience with a visual, literary and even geographic mapping.

This presentation will focus on the literary and visual GPS of Cross Creek in Central Florida; home to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. When Rawlings engaged her audience, she did it with place from a descriptive perspective so clear and thorough that readers could envision the sights, sounds, smells and humidity of Cross Creek.  Visual images will be added through photographs taken for the publication Marjorie's Cross Creek. A discussion of the process of writing Marjorie's Cross Creek will be included.

Film: Julia Robinson and Hilbert’s Tenth Problem

Frank G. Pogue Student Center - Scot Cinema @ 405 Scotland Road, Edinboro, PA 16444

Frank G. Pogue Student Center, Scot Cinema

Presented by the Math & Computer Sciences Department and the Math Club.

Mathematics is often seen as a male-dominated field, and even more so at the time when Julia Robinson made significant contributions to mathematical decision problems, including the famous tenth problem of Hilbert. Robinson was the first woman elected to the mathematical section of the National Academy of Sciences, and the first woman to become president of the American Mathematical Society. This one-hour film is a portrayal of Julia Robinson, her contributions to one of the central problems of 20th century mathematics, and the unusual partnership of American and Russian mathematicians with whom she worked at the height of the cold war.

    Lecture: "Can Women be Sexists?"

Hendricks Hall @ 235 Scotland Road, Edinboro, PA 16444

Dr. Stephen J. Sullivan, Philosophy Department
    Hendricks Hall, Room 200

"It's a commonplace in feminist theory (e.g, in Allan G. Johnson's important book The Gender Knot:  Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy) that sexism is so tied up in male supremacy that it makes little sense to speak of women being sexist. This view parallels the widespread notion in sociology of race that it makes little sense to speak of racial minorites being racist. Speaking as a liberal feminist I find both claims to be highly implausible and poorly supported. In my talk I will focus on the issue of sexism."
