Frank G. Pogue Student Center, Scot Cinema Presented by the Math & Computer Sciences Department and the Math Club. Mathematics is often seen as a male-dominated field, and even more so at the time when Julia Robinson made significant contributions to mathematical decision problems, including the famous tenth problem of Hilbert. Robinson was the first woman elected to the mathematical section of the National Academy of Sciences, and the first woman to become president of the American Mathematical Society. This one-hour film is a portrayal of Julia Robinson, her contributions to one of the central problems of 20th century mathematics, and the unusual partnership of American and Russian mathematicians with whom she worked at the height of the cold war. |
