Fallen trousers, sexual indiscretions, mistaken identities and lewd puns abound in Joe Orton's riotous farce about psychiatry, religion, marriage, government, definitions of gender and even simple language. What the Butler Saw is a farce written by English playwright Joe Orton. It premièred at the Queen's Theatre in London on 5 March 1969. It was Orton's final play, written only shortly before he was brutally murdered by his lover Kenneth Halliwell.
