About Sister Joan Chittister


Joan ChittisterSister Joan Chittister has been a key visionary voice and spiritual leader for more than 30 years. A Benedictine Sister of Erie, Pennsylvania, Sister Joan is an international lecturer and award-winning author of more than 40 books.

She is the founder and executive director of Benetvision, a resource and research center for contemporary spirituality located in Erie. Currently she serves as co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, a partner organization of the UN, facilitating a worldwide network of peace-building women. She is also co-chair of the Network of Spiritual Progressives with Rabbi Michael Lerner and Cornel West.

She was an advisor for the groundbreaking report, A Woman’s Nation, led by Maria Shriver (2009) and was a member of the TED prize-sponsored Council of Sages, an interfaith group that developed a
Charter for Compassion (2009) being promulgated worldwide with all faith organizations. She is a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and a regular blogger for the Huffington Post. She is also on the Abrahamic Advisory Committee at Chautauqua Institution.
