Glenn Miller Orchestra brings the ever-popular 'big band' sound to Edinboro University

EDINBORO, Pa. - Edinboro University's 2009-2010 Performing Arts Series kicks off next week with the sounds of perhaps the most renown "big band" of them all, the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

The globally-famous big band will perform in concert Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Louis C. Cole Auditorium-Memorial Hall to launch this year's Performing Arts Series.

Edinboro University has a long-standing tradition of hosting this annual, world-class performing arts series featuring the most extraordinary and renowned musicians and performers.

This year is no exception as the tradition continues with a diverse offering of performing artists sure to delight the young and not-so-young alike.

In addition to their performances, some of the visiting musicians, as has been Edinboro's custom, will provide master classes for students. The classes are free and open to the public and will be publicly announced later.

Funded by the Edinboro University Student Government Association, the Performing Arts Series includes six concerts that begin next week and conclude in April.

Considered to be the most popular and sought-after big band in the world today for both concert and swing dance engagements, the present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since. Playing an average of 300 live dates a year, the orchestra, conducted by trombonist Larry O'Brian, is said to be one of the all-time greatest of the big band era.

The Edinboro concert will be filled with timeless musical selections closely associated with the United States just before, during and after World War II.

Other Performing Arts Series concerts for 2009-10 include:

  • Nov. 16: Aquila Theatre
  • Dec. 11: Guitarist Brian Head and Cellist Paula Fehrenbach (Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center)
  • Feb. 5: Pianist Maurizio Barboro
  • March 17: Woods Tea Company
  • April 8: Irish Times

All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at Cole Auditorium unless otherwise noted. Tickets are $10 for general admission, free for Edinboro University students, and $5 for faculty, staff and President's Pass holders. Tickets are available at the Student Government Association Convenience Store, at the door, or can be obtained online at www.edinboroticketgs.com.
