Edinboro University again will sponsor annual high school journalism competition

Contest awards $1,000 scholarship & cash prizes


EDINBORO, Pa. – For the 6th consecutive year, Edinboro University will again sponsor its Annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition.

The competition is designed to recognize and reward journalistic talent among the region’s high school juniors and seniors. This year’s is again open to all students currently in 11th and 12th grades who have an interest in print, broadcast or photo journalism.

“We’ve been sponsoring this competition for the past six years and we’ve always been fortunate to have the support of high school teachers and talented students around the region,” said Dr. Melissa Gibson, associate professor and competition chairperson. “It’s a great way to showcase the talents of high school students who have an interest in journalism.”

Cash prizes, provided by Gazette Newspapers, WCTL; and, WJET-TV, and Fox 66-TV, will be awarded to the top finishers. Winners will receive the following cash prizes: First-place, $100; Second place, $50; Third place, $25; Fourth place, placement certificate; and Fifth place, placement certificate. One “Best in Show” winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to Edinboro University.

“The Communication & Media Studies Department is delighted to again recognize outstanding high school journalism,” said Dr. Anthony Peyronel, department chair. “I believe this event is an important indicator of the overall quality of Edinboro University's journalism program and underscores our ongoing efforts in community outreach and student recruitment."

All award winners and one guest (guidance counselor, teacher or parent) will be invited to the University’s annual Awards Luncheon on April 12, 2012. The luncheon is part of Edinboro University’s annual High School Journalism Day.

All competition entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of faculty members from the Edinboro University Communication & Media Studies Department, and student staff members from campus media organizations.

Students can compete in four print journalism categories (News, Feature, Sports, and Opinion); two photo journalism categories (News Photo and Feature Photo); and two broadcast journalism categories (Broadcast News Package and Newscast Anchor).

Students may submit one entry per category, but there is no limit to the number of entries submitted by each high school. Two copies of each entry must be received by March 14, 2012.
