The awards ceremony portion of the event, which will see the announcement of the recipient of the Michael V. Gmitter Memorial Scholarship, begins at 6 p.m.
The students selected as finalists for the up to $2,500 scholarship are Ashley Garner, Laura Hersh, Lauren Joyce, Alex Kendzior, Lindsey Lewicki, Caitlin McDonald, Julie Moretti, Adrian Narai, Melanie Robinson, Hannah Schurr, Emily Speakman, Jillian Wisniewski and Leah Yungwirth.
The Michael V. Gmitter Memorial Scholarship was created to honor and cherish the memory of Michael V. Gmitter, who passed away on July 25, 2006, at the age of 22, and to celebrate his passion for art. Michael was expected to graduate from Edinboro University with a degree in fine arts with an emphasis in jewelry design/metalsmithing in the spring of 2007.
Created by Michael’s late father, Rich, along with his mother, Jan, and brother, Devin, the Michael V. Gmitter Memorial Scholarship was first awarded on April 4, 2007.
The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a major or minor degree in the area of Fine Arts/Crafts (jewelry/metalsmithing, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, textile design, weaving/fibers, wood/furniture). Candidates submit recently created art or craft pieces for initial screening by the selection committee and submissions are judged based on artistic ability, originality, creativity, analysis of detail, craftsmanship, power of design and overall presentation.
Scholarship jurors are Jan Gmitter, scholarship founder; Dietrich Wegner, associate professor of Foundations/Sculpture; Dong Hwa Kim, assistant professor of Graphic & Interactive Design; Tavia La Follette, director of Bruce Gallery; and Daniel Burke, professor and Art Department chair at Mercyhurst University.
The corresponding gallery show of artwork by the 13 student finalists for the scholarship will be open March 5-14 in Bruce Gallery. The Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. For more information, contact the Gallery at (814) 732-2513.
