Edinboro University earns eighth consecutive Military Friendly distinction

For the last eight years, Edinboro University has been recognized for embracing military students and dedicating resources to ensure their success in the classroom and beyond.

This year, EU earned two national awards for commitment to veterans through the ROTC program and the Veterans Success Center. Victory Media granted Edinboro University the coveted Silver Award as a Military Friendly School – the eighth consecutive Military Friendly Award for EU.

Additionally, Military Times announced that Edinboro University earned a spot on the national Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings (formerly “Best for Vets”), based on an assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement.

“These distinctions demonstrate to new students and veterans who have never attended a university that Edinboro University will work to accommodate their needs and assist them as they begin their colligate careers,” said Andrew Matt, a U.S. Army veteran and Veterans Success Coordinator at Edinboro University. “This shows that Edinboro University goes above and beyond your average university to serve veterans.  Both awards show that the services provided by the Veterans Success Center place it among the best in Pennsylvania and the nation.”

According to Victory Media, the Military Friendly Schools distinction is given to colleges and universities that demonstrate positive education outcomes for veterans and their families. More than 200 companies and 1,200 post-secondary institutions receive this distinction each year, after earning top measurements in engaging prospective military students, educating military students and providing the student with meaningful employment.

“We live in an era where the value of military service in the professional world is unquestioned and unmatched,” said Daniel Nichols, chief product officer of Victory Media. “Our nation’s military members perform highly skilled jobs, using high-tech equipment in some of the most challenging situations. They’re leaders who work well in teams and are truly mission oriented.”

The Veterans Success Center manages Edinboro’s resources for veterans, current service members and their dependents. It ensures that these students receive not only the university’s high-quality and affordable education but also individualized support services. The Center also places emphasis on making the transition from the military to college life a smooth one.

“Both of these distinctions will help the Veterans Success Center to better develop programs and systems to assist veterans on campus,” said Matt, who noted that EU joins Kutztown (Gold), Bloomsburg (Silver) and Clarion (Bronze) universities as the only schools in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to receive Military Friendly status. “These are by no means the end point of the journey, but they are great mile markers for us to pass.”

Edinboro University is currently the only four-year higher-education institution in the Erie region to reach the Silver Award status. Gannon University earned the Bronze level for 2017.

The Military Times Best ranking is an editorially independent news project that evaluates factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families. More than 600 colleges took part in this year’s detailed survey.

“Of the hundreds of schools that applied, fewer than half received the Military Times Best: Colleges designation this year. Only the best made the cut," said George Altman, rankings editor for Military Times. “For the past eight years, we've seen colleges and universities consistently increasing their resources, revising their policies and improving their academic outcomes for military and veteran students.”
