EU graduate counseling program ranked among best in Northeast

Edinboro University’s graduate-level counseling program earned a top affordability ranking among higher-education institutions in the northeastern United States.

Best Counseling Degrees, an online resource and ranking system that researches schools with accredited counseling programs, awarded EU the No. 16 rank among the Top 25 Most Affordable Master’s Degrees in Counseling in the Northeast for 2017.

“Future counselors need an affordable educational experience which meets the rigorous criteria of licensure,” said Dr. Erinn Lake, executive director of EU’s School of Graduate Studies and Research and interim dean of the School of Education. “Edinboro University’s outstanding Counseling program helps them achieve that goal.”

Schools on the Best Counseling Degrees list are ranked based on affordability of out-of-state graduate tuition, accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

EU’s Master of Arts in Counseling prepares professionals to serve diverse communities and unique individuals through art therapy, clinical rehabilitation, clinical mental health, college counseling and school counseling. Nearly half of Edinboro graduates work as mental health counselors or substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors.

“Counselors are vital to our world, as they help improve acceptance and self-esteem, change negative behaviors, manage stress and improve problem solving and confidence in their clients,” Lake said. “Edinboro University is pleased to continue to contribute to the improvement of quality of life for others.”

The Top 25 list considered 75 schools in the Northeast, including Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Schools must meet rigorous criteria and receive approval from CACREP.

Edinboro’s online graduate programs earned three additional honors for affordability in 2017. Best Counseling Degrees named EU’s Master of Education in Educational Psychology the No. 6 online program in the United States. The higher-education comparison website also recognized EU’s Master of Arts in School Counseling and Master of Arts in Counseling as the No. 13 and No. 28 low-cost online programs in their respective categories.
