I Want to Join Greek Life

Fraternity and sorority recruitment can vary from campus to campus, so here are some tips and information to get you started at PennWest Edinboro.

What Is Recruitment?

Fraternity and sorority recruitment refers to the recruiting of new members into an organization. Recruitment time frames are different for each organization; general fraternity and sorority information is listed below. Each fraternity and sorority has a set of values (such as leadership, honor, scholarship) by which they judge potential new members during their recruitment period. At the same time, potential new members see how they align with the values of the organization and how well they enjoy the fraternity/sorority as a whole, checking out areas such as brotherhood/sisterhood, philanthropy, and academics. At the end of a recruitment period, a fraternity/sorority may extend a formal invitation to join to potential new members. This invitation is referred to a bid. If the student accepts and signs the bid, they move one step closer to being a brother or sister of one of Edinboro's fraternities or sororities.

Sorority Recruitment

Panhellenic recruitment at Edinboro is partially structured and typically takes place during the third week of the fall semester. Potential New Members (PNMs) attend a round robin session where they can meet each organization, followed by three more rounds of mutually selective recruitment where PNMs experience the values and philanthropy of particular groups. Thursday night of recruitment is preference night, which PNMs attend by invitation. On Friday comes the Bid Day Bash where PNMs reveal which organization they have joined and can celebrate with their new sisters. PNMs are assisted through the process by Recruitment Counselors (RCs,) who help guide them through the assessment of personal values to ensure that the PNM is maximizing the recruitment process.

Fraternity Recruitment

Currently, there is no formal fraternity recruitment structure. Typically, each fraternity will set out a schedule of events allowing potential new members to know more about the fraternity and the men in it. After a certain point (determined by each fraternity), a bid may be extended. While most recruitment events occur during the first few weeks of the semester, the fraternities practice dynamic recruitment, meaning that they are always looking for potential new members to meet and get to know.
