Student Resources

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) at PennWest Edinboro provides a wide range of resources to help students with disabilities fully participate in the academic experience. Contact OSD staff for additional information and enrollment details.

Academic Aide Office

Students with approved testing accommodations (i.e. extended time, readers, scribes) schedule their exams in one of the 10 private testing rooms. The OSD employs Academic Aides to assist and monitor students during testing. Assistance with classroom mechanics is available when necessary.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. There are a wide range of assistive technology programs available for download from the internet, as well as programs and equipment available for purchase.  Many assistive technology options, such as notetaking apps, voice-to-text programs, text reading software, etc… are free (via downloadable programs/apps) or are offered at a low to moderate cost (for program and/or upgrades).

Assistive technology needs are based on the student’s disability and can be very individualized.  Many students have utilized assistive technology while in high school.  It is recommended that you continue this practice while in college and have your technology in place prior to your first day of classes.

Students who are unsure of what their assistive technology needs may be or what type(s) of equipment and programs are available should contact the OSD to explore the various options.

Please note:  Colleges are not required to purchase personal assistive technology for students.  Students who receive support through vocational rehabilitation offices are encouraged to contact their counselors to inquire into financial support for purchasing programs and/or equipment.

Writing Services

Support for individual students in all stages of the writing process is available using various strategies that compensate for written language disabilities. There is a fee for this service.
