Athletics at Edinboro are entering a new world — a virtual one. Beginning in fall 2019, Edinboro’s new eSports Team will begin competition against some of the top gamers in the world. The eSports team will be a varsity sport and a member of the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE). Players will compete in games like Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Hearthstone.

Edinboro’s team will be one of fewer than 100 eSports programs in the country — and the only one in Western Pennsylvania. The University will be announcing new space and amenities dedicated to the program in the near future.

The team is open to students from all majors, but Edinboro is uniquely positioned for eSports because of its academic strengths in game design, animation and virtual world development.

Edinboro is nationally ranked in the following areas:

“We’re looking for players ready to challenge the most competitive gamers in the world,” said Chris Rhodes, team director. “Student-athletes will have the chance to be a Fighting Scot and participate in one of the world’s fastest growing sports.”

Team members will need to meet the same academic eligibility and related requirements as every other student-athlete at the University. Tryouts are open to first-time, first-year and currently enrolled Edinboro students.

Students interested in applying should submit their contact information at www.edinboro.edu/esports.  The University will be in touch regarding the selection process to fill the available spots on the newly created team.

Students enrolled in Edinboro’s nationally ranked Game and Virtual World Development track experience both computer science and art coursework and have access to state-of-the-art, virtual reality equipment. For more information, visit www.edinboro.edu/game-design.
