Lantinen named director of Edinboro’s Center for Branding and Strategic Communication

Christopher Lantinen ’10, ’14, who joined PennWest Edinboro’s faculty in 2014 as an instructor in the Communication, Journalism and Media Department, was named director of the Center for Branding and Strategic Communication – Edinboro’s branch of the Northwest Pennsylvania Innovation Beehive Network.

Lantinen assumed the role on July 1 following the retirement of longtime Edinboro professor and executive director Dr. Tony Peyronel.

The Northwest Pennsylvania Innovation Beehive is a network featuring PennWest Edinboro, Gannon and Mercyhurst universities, Penn State Behrend and the Erie County Library that focuses on assisting start-ups and businesses in the region.

“I'm excited to continue working with the region's innovative and passionate entrepreneurs,” said Lantinen, who will collaborate with the creative team of professors Scott Gladd and Cassandra Reese on operations. “Not only do I get to work with our talented students and faculty but I also get to work with great minds at these other regional institutions.”

In his new role, Lantinen will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations and administrative tasks related to Edinboro’s beehive; assisting clients with social media management, podcasting, search engine optimization, digital marketing and brand storytelling; and running social media marketing, podcasting and the official website for the entire network.

Lantinen said he looks forward to increasing digital marketing assistance and training and workshop sessions in the area and expanding the student start-up hub following the renovations in the Baron-Forness Library. This is in addition to the award-winning logo development and branding work from the Center.

“All future initiatives really point back toward two objectives: providing PennWest Edinboro students with great educational opportunities and helping out businesses and entrepreneurs in this region,” he said. “We've done a great job bringing in clients, so we'll be keeping many things the same.”

Additionally, Lantinen hopes to continue the legacy of Peyronel, who has been a mentor since Lantinen joined the faculty in 2014.

“It's indescribable the amount of guidance he's passed down, and that obviously extends to how he's prepared me for taking on this role,” he said. “Specifically, the standards he set for promoting Beehive successes and understanding client and regional needs are strengths we'll carry on.” 

Prior to his work with the Beehive Network, Lantinen served as faculty advisor to the Spectator – PennWest Edinboro’s weekly campus newspaper. He previously worked with Atlantic Records as a freelance podcast producer.

As a faculty member, Lantinen taught courses such as designing pop culture, media aesthetics, beginning reporting, digital media design, feature writing and best practices for podcasting.

In August 2020, Lantinen was named to the Erie Reader’s “40 Under 40” for his teaching and advising.

Lantinen earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Edinboro in 2010 and a master’s degree in communication studies in 2014.

Edinboro’s Center for Branding and Strategic Communication works in collaboration with clients to align brand and marketing strategies – including increasing brand awareness, creative design and product promotion.

By using a mixture of graphic and interactive design and public relations, the center develops original and creative content that reflects the unique mission, values and goals of its constituents while strengthening brand recognition.
