Dr. Ron Raymond, associate professor and internship coordinator in Edinboro University’s Department of Communications, Journalism and Media, was recognized as the 2022 Faculty Member of the Year.
The annual award honors a tenured professor who demonstrates excellence in teaching.
Raymond has more than 30 years of experience in the radio industry, working on air and as a manager for stations in Florida and Pennsylvania, most recently as general manager of WCTL-FM, Erie’s Contemporary Christian station.
He serves as faculty advisor to WFSE-FM, Edinboro University’s student-run campus station, and as business manager for all three of the university’s campus media organizations. His primary teaching responsibilities include audio production and beginning reporting, as well as courses in announcing and station management, sales and promotion.
Listeners can tune into Raymond’s play-by-play announcing, as he frequently assists Edinboro’s student radio announcers with color commentary.
“My teaching philosophy is predicated on the recognition that each student who enters my classroom – in-person or virtually – every semester is a unique individual, with varying life experiences, values, goals and expectations,” Raymond wrote in his official Teaching Philosophy submission. “My main goal then is to somehow convey to each individual that they are important, they belong, and the classroom is better because they are in it.”
Graduate student Melissa Giardini, who nominated Raymond for Faculty Member of the Year, said that in six years as his student, she discovered his passion for helping students succeed in their careers.
“Dr. Raymond has a unique philosophy of teaching, leaving forever impacts on each student that enters his classroom,” said Giardini, who studies in the Master of Arts in Communications Studies curriculum. “He spends his days encouraging, supporting and inspiring students – believing that each student will change the world in some way positively.”
Raymond earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Edinboro University. He studied Speech Communication for his Bachelor of Arts degree (’83) and Managerial and Leadership Communications for his master’s degree (’06).
He then earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2013, where he studied Communications Media and Instructional Technology. His dissertation focused on management practices of student-run broadcast radio stations.
Prior to teaching at Edinboro, Raymond served as adjunct professor in the Department of Communication at Houghton College.
Throughout his professional career, he has maintained research interest in several areas associated with technology and communication, including pedagogy, media studies and popular culture.
Previously, Raymond was nominated for Faculty Member of the Year in 2018, 2020 and 2021. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, he was recognized by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters for excellence in broadcasting.
