Scope and Content Notes: This is a collection of some of the research materials Russell Vance used for writing his book, A Portrait of Edinboro, From Private Academy to State College, 1856-1976. Published in 1977, this book is the standard history of the school. In this collection is an eclectic group of papers, nearly all of which are related to the school's history. Contained in this collection are some papers of Margaret Compton. These are mostly notes for class lectures, but there are a few pieces of coorespondences.

There is also a small collection of photocopies of newspapers. One of these is the Educational Independent, a paper edited by former school principal Joseph Cooper.

Organization of Collection:
There is only one series, Edinboro College History

Series Description:
The folders have, as much as possible, remained labled as Russell Vance had them identified. Some of the folders are rich with Edinboro memoribilia. For instance, the "historical development" folder contains programs from the 1860's. There are also the "Religious Organizations, 1909-30" and "Special Day, 1914-54" folders that contain programs from the meetings and events. These include such things as the 75th Anniversary program and the topics examined during group discussions of the religious groups on campus.

This collection also contains papers from Margaret Compton, for whom Compton Hall is named. It contains a few pieces of correspondence and a number of notes on various topics that were probably used as class presentations. There is also the "Civil War Correspondence to Sophie and Margaret Compton," folder containing two letters to the Compton,s.
