          Federal Direct Stafford Loans

The federal government offers two types of Federal Direct Stafford Loan programs:

          • The Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan is for students who demonstrate financial need. No interest is charged while a student is in school at least half-time.
          • The Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is not based on financial need. Interest is charged during all periods, even when the student is in school.

          Requirements/Eligibility:

          Interest and Repayment Information:

          • The interest rate was 4.66% for the 2014-2015 school year.
          • The Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan interest is deferred while you are in school. Depending on when you borrowed your subsidized loan, it may or may not accrue interest during your grace period, which is the first six months after you leave school or drop below at least part-time and also during periods of deferment.
          • When students graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time, federal law requires that they complete Exit Counseling, which provides information on how to manage student loans. See the Exit Interview Guide for more information.
