Students with documented disabilities may qualify for support services at Porreco College. The starting point is the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) on the main campus. OSD staff will determine what support services are appropriate for the individual student and indicate this on a Classroom Accommodations form. The professional academic counselor at Porreco College will engage in the interactive process with the student to determine which services are desired and/or declined by the student for each of his/her courses. Collaboration by the student, the academic counselor, and the student’s professors is essential for the effective delivery of classroom accommodations. Students need to approach both the academic counselor and the professor at least one week in advance to make arrangements for testing accommodations.
College students must make numerous important decisions about their college major, electing a minor(s) and career plans. History has shown that some students are prone to making hasty, insufficiently researched decisions while others agonize over these decisions for extended periods, which may be counterproductive. In either case, some of these students experience negative consequences, such as taking multiple unnecessary courses, poor academic performance, wasted resources and unrealized goals.
To help promote a systematic, proactive approach to these important academic and career decisions, the professional academic counselor at Porreco College provides guided career exploration services to students on a first come-first served basis during regularly scheduled, walk-in advising hours. Assessment tools are used when appropriate and, on occasion, referrals are made to other service providers in the local community or to the Center for Career Development.
