The Department of Biology and Health Sciences prepares students for scientific research and applied work in their field through lab work, theory application, class lectures and hands-on experiences.

The department’s primary mission is to train our students for their future career and/or educational opportunities in biological and environmental sciences. Our degree programs enable students to pursue a wide variety of career and educational pathways including: biological research, health care, environmental management, wildlife conservation, and education (university, K12, naturalist in science museums, zoos, aquariums, parks and nature centers). Their training can also be combined with other fields for careers in: biotechnology, forensic science, politics, business, economics, mathematics (bioinformatics), scientific writing, and scientific illustration.
Our programs are designed to prepare students for a wide variety of entry level biology positions, as well as graduate work in biologically related Master’s and Doctoral programs. The Biology and Health Sciences Programs are proudly accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Minors & Programs
Bachelor's
DescriptionStudents interested in entering schools of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary science, optometry, or podiatry usually pursue the pre-healing arts option of the Bachelor of Science in Biology. Pre-healing arts students are assigned an advisor who provides special guidance in selecting courses that will be helpful in gaining admission to professional schools.
In addition, the department offers specific programs and degrees in related areas. These include the Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology, and the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science/Biology. DescriptionEdinboro University offers a course of study in liberal arts and sciences to prepare students for admission to schools of veterinary medicine. Though admission requirements for professional schools vary, the program at Edinboro University can be tailored to meet the requirements for any school.
DescriptionThe BS in Environmental Biology program is intended to provide the student with a specialized study of environmental biology and related scientific disciplines at the undergraduate level. Students who wish to prepare for a career emphasizing the biological components of environmental sciences will find this curriculum appropriate. Graduates may find employment with local, state, and federal environmental agencies, zoos and aquaria, private consulting firms, or continue on to graduate school.
DescriptionThe BS in Environmental Biology: Wildlife Biology concentration program is intended to provide the student with a specialized study of wildlife biology with a broad-based curriculum at the undergraduate level. This curriculum will also provide the academic requirements for students to apply to the Wildlife Society for certification as an Associate Wildlife Biologist. Students will learn about the management and conservation of wildlife and be prepared for work or graduate school in the wildlife field.
DescriptionThe Bachelor of Science with a major in Health Sciences program is designed to prepare students in human health related professions. The basic degree will directly prepare students to entry level human health related careers such as health service managers, pharmaceutical representatives, and community health educators.
DescriptionEdinboro University students can now get an early start on chiropractic school! Edinboro has established affiliations with the New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) and Logan University (Logan) enabling Edinboro University Pre-Chiropractic Health Sciences majors to enter NYCC or Logan after their junior year of college. The agreements establish three plus three programs in chiropractic medicine practice, which refers to three years of undergraduate study at Edinboro and three years of chiropractic school at NYCC or Logan. Student who successfully complete their first year of studies at NYCC or Logan and transfer their credits back to Edinboro will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences from Edinboro.

DescriptionA medical technologist performs various chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic and other medical laboratory procedures used by a physician for determining the presence and extent of disease. Approximately two-thirds of all medical technologists are employed in hospital laboratories. Others work in physicians offices, armed forces and government laboratories and pharmaceutical houses.
