Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) was founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, which is now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis. The founders chose the name from the Greek words storgé, tharsos, and timé, meaning love, courage, and honor. STTI became incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax status in the United States.
The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, is to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. STTI membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.
EU's Nu Theta Chapter was formed on April 26, 1992. The Nu Theta Chapter is the 318th chapter established by Sigma Theta Tau International.

SNOE is a very active student organization comprised of student nurses from freshman through senior year that take part in a wide variety of activities throughout the year. It is a solely student driven organization full of wonderful and motivated individuals who are passionate about their chosen profession of nursing.
SNOE encourages ALL nursing majors to get involved. SNOE is a fun way to network, make friends, and give back! Examples of their activities include the social committee which held a welcome-back picnic, movie night, bowling night, and Halloween party! SNOE also walked in the Homecoming parade. The volunteer committee organized a SNOE volunteer day at the Buddy Walk in Erie as well as the Second Harvest Food Bank. They also made Christmas cards to send to Edinboro Manor, volunteered doing health screenings at General McLane, and sent a few members to RAKE (Random Acts of Kindness in Edinboro). Finally, the career committee brought in a pediatric nurse to speak with the nursing majors. Edinboro University and the Department of Nursing is proud of this great student organization!
