Edinboro's Department of Sociology prepares students to work in a variety of professional
settings, such as local, state, regional and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations
and for-profit enterprises, educational settings and community development. Our programs
also serve as foundations for success in graduate programs in a variety of sociology
specialties and the social sciences.
Why Study Sociology at Edinboro?
The Department of Sociology envisions a more equitable society built upon vibrant
social relations, sustainable communities and inclusive institutions guided by the
principles of diversity, participatory democracy, civic engagement, and social and
economic justice.
Students thrive in our comprehensive and engaging program, which develops skills such
as research design, data collection and analysis, report writing, survey methods,
interviewing techniques, group facilitation, strategic planning, policy analysis,
community organizing, program evaluation and ethics in research, and social and human
services practice.
We inspire learners to use sociology to inform individual agency, enable professional
opportunities, engage social change and create social good. We prepare adult learners
with critical sociological imaginations, strong technical skills and adaptable professional
competencies.
With an emphasis on diversity and social justice, our program prepares students to
transcend the boundaries of their formal education and engage the challenges of professional
employment, civil/civic society and public/private life.
